Murders Overseas

An article named, "Obama Says U.S. Doing Its Utmost to Protect Americans Overseas" in the Los Angeles Times by Kathleen Hennessy, dated September 15, 2012 discusses President Obama's speech during a ceremony at Andrew's Air Force Base. The ceremony was conducted in remembrance of the four Americans, including ambassador Chris Stevens, killed this week in Benghazi, Libya because of violent protests. Since then the United States has sent 50 marines and several destroyer ships in order to keep the rest of the American citizens safe. Obama claims that the United States of America is doing whatever it can to protect all Americans serving in Libya and Egypt. The angry protests began in response to a disrespectful, anti-Muslim video produced right here in southern California. However, there is speculation that the attacks on the American Embassy were pre-meditated by terrorist organizations such as, the Taliban, considering that they took place on 9/11. President Obama concluded his speech by giving his condolences to those who lost loved ones, affirming that, “They died as they lived their lives – defending their fellow Americans, and advancing the values that all of us hold dear.”

  1. President Obama was a little late to send aid to the foriegn countries housing his ambassadors. When the attack began they could have sent numerous ways of help to the region from the battelships stationed in the Persian Gulf. But since the events have already passed all we can do is repsect the lives of the fallen and mourn their deaths.

  2. Sending the 50 marines and the battle destroyer ships was a great move by Obama. I do not think he was late at all, because sending aid right when the attack happened would not change anything. The damage was already done. Although, there could have been protection beforehand considering the fact that America is not well liked in those countries. What is important is that we have protection now to keep the citizens safe. It is not easy to live in a country where you are not liked by all people, and difference in religions is not helping at all. Now that President Obama has sent aid and protection, the citizens will feel more comfortable and safe.

  3. I agree with the speculations that this attack was pre-meditated by a terrorist group, especially since it took place on September 11. However, it is possible that the attack was triggered by the anti-Muslim video that was filmed recently. This shows how large of an impact the media has on every aspect of our lives. Recently, I read an article about ambassador Chris Stevens. The article was about how the ambassador was overly respectful to the Arabic culture. He strived to respect all their traditions, and even went to the far limit of attempting to talk Arabic with the Libyan citizens. It is tragic to witness such a crime against an innocent man. President Obama took the right step to ensure future protection of the remaining Americans in Libya.

  4. Another respectful gesture by one of the better Presidents America has had in a long time. President Obama showed the uttermost respect to ambassador Chris Stevens, along with the other three Americans who lost their lives in Libya last week with the speech he presented. The Middle Eastern countries' beliefs and interpretations of certain actions, such as the anti-Muslim movie made in America, ultimately caused these four Americans their lives, although they were not even linked to the production of the movie. These Libyan rebels and possibly Taliban forces that were behind this gritted their teeth to show what their fearless side with this attack, but they may be messing with the wrong country at this point.

  5. I agree with what President Obama had done to protect the ambassadors in Libya. America being the “security guards of the world” truly are helping by sending their troops and ships. I believe they are doing their best to protect their citizens in this situation. Libya is messing with the wrong country.

  6. I believe that these attacks on United State's embassies have been deliberately done by the Taliban, and I hope Obama responds with the proper answer. We should all honor the troops that have dies oversees, and I am glad that Obama did so. I am hoping this violence calms down, but if war is needed then we need to do it to bring peace.

  7. I believe Obama handled the situation well. As for his delay on sending aid, I do not think it really mattered when he sent it, the damage would already have been done either way. Seeing as our president clearly knows what he is doing, I do not think the citizens in Libya have anything to worry about.
